A defense-vs-position chart is one of the most misread tools in fantasy football. Managers glance at a rank, see "softest matchup at wide receiver," and start a borderline player without asking why that number looks the way it does. That shortcut costs points.

The raw figure on a DVP chart — fantasy points allowed per game to a given position — is a real number, but it answers a narrower question than most managers think. It tells you what happened. It does not tell you whether the defense caused it, whether the opponent's offense enabled it, or whether the game script that produced it will repeat. Before you act on a matchup rating, you need to work through three filters: scheme, pace, and opponent quality.

What the Number Actually Measures

Dallas also ranked first in points allowed to quarterbacks (23.3), but only sixth against running backs (24.9) and twentieth against tight ends (12.4). That pattern is the tell. A defense soft at quarterback and wide receiver while merely average elsewhere is usually describing the games it played rather than the players it fielded — a team that trailed frequently, forcing opponents into pass-heavy, high-volume scripts. Had Dallas been structurally exploitable everywhere, the tight end rank would not sit in the middle of the league. Context shapes the number.

The Three Filters

Scheme. Some defenses give up points to wide receivers because they play a lot of two-high safety shells that surrender underneath routes. Others give up points because they blitz aggressively and get burned deep. Those are different problems, and they favor different receiver types. A slot receiver who thrives on short-to-intermediate targets is not the same matchup as a vertical threat, even if the defense's WR rank looks identical. DVP data rolls all of this into one number. Use it to identify which defenses are genuinely porous, then think about whether the player you're starting exploits the specific vulnerability.

Pace. A defense that plays in fast games allows more fantasy points than a defense that plays in slow ones, almost by definition. More plays mean more opportunities. Cincinnati's defense ranked first in points allowed to running backs at 28.3 per game and first in points allowed to tight ends at 20.9. Cincinnati's offense was also among the league's highest-volume passing attacks. Opponent quality. A defense that faced four elite quarterbacks in a four-week stretch will have an inflated QB-allowed number that regresses once the schedule normalizes. Minnesota allowed just 11.1 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks in 2025, the stingiest mark in the league. Buffalo allowed 13.1. Those two defenses faced different mixes of opponents over the season, and a single-week matchup against either one carries different implications depending on which quarterback is walking into it. The raw rank does not adjust for that.

How to Use DVP Correctly

The right way to use a DVP chart is as a filter, not a verdict. Start with the rank to identify which defenses sit in the bottom third of the league at a given position — those are the matchups worth targeting. Then ask whether the underlying reasons for that rank apply to the specific player you're evaluating.

Trey McBride averaged 18.6 PPR points per game in 2025 with a 0.279 target share and a 0.59 WOPR. He is a high-volume, every-route tight end. Cincinnati ranked first in points allowed to tight ends at 20.9 per game. That matchup makes sense to pursue because McBride's usage profile — heavy target share, routes across the full field — maps directly onto what Cincinnati's defense gave up. A tight end who operates primarily as a blocker with occasional red-zone targets is a different conversation, even against the same defense.

The same logic applies at running back. Jonathan Taylor carried the ball 323 times in 2025 with a 0.11 target share — a volume runner who generates most of his value on the ground. Cincinnati ranked first in points allowed to running backs at 28.3 per game. But if that number is inflated by pass-catching backs who caught 60 or 70 balls against them, Taylor's profile may not be the one that exploits it. Check who actually scored against the defense, not just the aggregate.

A defense that allowed 36 points to receivers in its first three games may have faced three of the best receiving corps in the league. That is not a repeatable signal.

Weight recent games more heavily when a defense has made significant personnel changes or when a coordinator is new. The prior year's rank is a prior, not a prediction. Adjust it based on what you know about the current roster.

The honest limitation of any DVP chart is that it is backward-looking by construction. It tells you what defenses allowed, not what they will allow. Used as one input among several — alongside snap share data, implied totals, and injury reports — it sharpens decisions. Used alone, it misleads as often as it helps.
